NICU MOMS

The NICU is the only place in the world where tragedy and joy blend so seamlessly. Neonatal intensive care unit is where babies go when there is something wrong; most of the children in there now are preemies.

The parents are some of the most amazing people I have met. Some families are only in a few days before they can take their new baby home, others for weeks that stretch into months.

The families all keep an eye on each other, share in successes, fears, concerns and sorrow. As one baby begins to get better and closer to the time his parents can take them home, the mom’s will chat about new fears and advice for staying strong.

They will chat about each other’s child’s procedures and will look up and learn about different conditions, even the ones their own children don’t have.

The mom’s of these sick children really rely on each other, because they truly understand what the other is going trough. What it is like to see your child born too early, not being able to hold them while they are in the incubator, having to use breast pumps because they cannot nurse. This is something only the mother of a sick baby can understand.
