Northern Lights

So during large explosions and flares from the sun huge quantities of solar particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space.   According to researchers
These plasma clouds travel through space with speeds varying from 300 to 1000 kilometers per second. When the solar particles are stopped by the atmosphere, they collide with the atmospheric gases present, and the collision energy between the solar particle and the gas molecule is emitted as a photon - a light particle.
That's a very scientific way to describe the Northern Lights, which were visable in the sky last night...The less scientific way would have been oooh, pretty! It's the first time they could be seen over Victoria and for lack of better words is was really cool! The night sky had a large dancing green band through it and it was accompanied by several shooting stars. The entire display was amazing, however for a brief moment I thought that the universe had decided to snap back and we were all going to see the beautiful show before it was all over. Nope still here!
